The good news: if you have Iowa Medicaid or most major insurance plans, outpatient mental health care is usually a covered benefit, and we help you find out exactly where you stand before your first visit.
Does Iowa Medicaid cover therapy?
Yes. Outpatient mental health counseling is generally a covered benefit under Iowa Medicaid, including through the managed care organizations that administer it. For many members that means little or no out-of-pocket cost per session. Covered services commonly include individual counseling, and for eligible children, Behavioral Health Intervention Services (BHIS). Exact coverage depends on your specific plan, which is why we check it for you up front.
What if I have private insurance?
We accept most major insurance plans. Most cover outpatient mental health, but the details, your copay, deductible, and whether a service needs prior authorization, vary from plan to plan. What "we verify your benefits" actually means
Before your first appointment, our team contacts your plan and checks what is covered, what your share of the cost (if any) will be, and whether anything needs to be approved first. Then we tell you in plain terms, so there are no surprise bills. It is one of the first things we do when you reach out.
What to bring to your first visit
- Your insurance or Iowa Medicaid card.
- A photo ID.
- A short list of what is bringing you in, and any medications you take.

What if I am uninsured or not covered?
